If you're flying United's long-haul business class, the Polaris Lounge is where your trip actually starts. It's United's answer to Delta One Lounges and American's Flagship Lounges - a dedicated space built for international premium travelers, not a general-purpose airport club.
But access rules changed in a big way this year. If you're planning a trip and assuming your old Star Alliance business class ticket gets you in, it's worth double-checking. Here's everything you need to know before you fly.
A Polaris Lounge is United's top-tier airport lounge, separate from the more common United Club network.
Built exclusively for long-haul international business class travelers
Features à la carte, restaurant-style dining instead of a basic buffet
Includes shower suites, quiet daybeds, and a full bar with barista coffee
Far smaller in number than United Clubs - only six US locations exist
Think of United Club as the airport waiting room, and Polaris as the pre-flight experience. The gap between the two is significant, both in space and service level.
This is the part that's changed the most. As of April 14, 2026, United sharply narrowed who can use Polaris Lounges, largely to fix overcrowding at peak departure times.
Automatic access:
Passengers flying United Polaris (long-haul international business class) on Standard or Flexible fares
Access applies at your departure, connection, and same-day arrival airport
No guests are permitted for United Polaris business class ticket holders
Not eligible:
Basic Business fare holders on United Polaris - this fare class is excluded from lounge access
Most Star Alliance partner business class passengers, including those flying Turkish Airlines, EgyptAir, Singapore Airlines, LOT Polish, TAP Air Portugal, and Air India
Star Alliance partners who still qualify (as of the April 2026 update):
First class: ANA, Lufthansa, and SWISS - one guest permitted
Business class (Basic or Flex fares): Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines
Business class: ANA, Air New Zealand, and ITA Airways
If your ticket is on any other Star Alliance carrier, you'll be directed to a United Club instead, regardless of your cabin or elite status.
What's new - domestic access: Starting summer 2026, United is introducing Polaris business class on select domestic transcon routes using new A321neo "Coastliner" aircraft between LAX, SFO, and EWR. Passengers booked in a domestic Polaris seat will get Polaris Lounge access for the first time - a first for a non-international itinerary.
Important: United Club membership, credit-card lounge access, and one-time passes do not work at Polaris Lounges. There's no paid entry option - eligibility is ticket-based only.
United currently operates six Polaris Lounges in the US, plus one international arrivals lounge.
Chicago O'Hare (ORD)
Terminal 1, Concourse C, near gate C18. Widely considered the flagship of the network following a recent renovation.
Newark (EWR)
Terminal C, near gate C120. A major transatlantic departure point with a dedicated dining area, sleeping suites, and shower rooms.
San Francisco (SFO)
International Terminal G, just past security. Known for its noodle bar and large upstairs dining room.
Houston Intercontinental (IAH)
Terminal E, next to gate E12.
Los Angeles (LAX)
Terminal 7, between gates 73 and 75A. Competes directly with the nearby Delta One Lounge at LAX.
Washington Dulles (IAD)
Concourse C, next to gate C18. United's most recently opened domestic Polaris Lounge.
London Heathrow (LHR) — Arrivals Lounge
Located just past immigration and customs, open daily from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is an arrivals-only lounge, exclusively for same-day United Polaris business class arrivals landing before noon. Guests are not permitted, and United Club memberships or passes do not apply here.
United had originally planned lounges in Hong Kong, Tokyo Narita, and Denver as well. Those remain unopened, with no confirmed timeline.
This is where Polaris Lounges separate themselves from a standard airline club.
Full à la carte, table-service dining rooms with rotating seasonal menus
Buffet stations with hot and cold items, often including a noodle bar
Full-service bar with premium cocktails and barista-made coffee
All food and beverage is complimentary for eligible passengers
Tip: Arrive at least two hours before boarding. Dining wait times can run long during evening departure banks, particularly at SFO and EWR.

Attendants can provide extras on request — straighteners, shaving kits, dental kits
Showers run first-come, first-served
Tip: Request a shower slot at the front desk immediately after arriving. Wait times can exceed 30 minutes during peak hours.
Most locations offer quiet rest areas or daybeds designed for a short nap between connections.

If you're on an overnight flight and plan to sleep onboard, eating in the lounge beforehand - rather than during the flight - is a common strategy among frequent Polaris flyers.
Polaris Lounges are built more for relaxation than productivity, but each location includes seating areas with power outlets and Wi-Fi suitable for a quick work session before boarding. Don't expect dedicated business centers or private meeting rooms - that's not the focus here.

Does a United Polaris credit card give me lounge access?
No credit card, including United's co-branded cards, grants Polaris Lounge access on its own. Access is tied to your flight ticket.
Can Basic Business fare passengers use the lounge?
No. As of the April 2026 policy update, United's own Basic Business fare on Polaris-equipped long-haul flights does not include lounge access.
Are all Star Alliance business class passengers still eligible?
